(Apr. 24 – Apr. 30) After eating a plate of shrimp scampi, Emily breaks out in hives. What cells are releasing the histamine causing this reaction?

(C) Basophils & Mast Cells. These cells release granules called histamine that are involved in inflammation. The process is mediated by allergens (from the shrimp) bound to Ig-E antibodies that bind to the surface of these cells to initiate the histamine release. The histamine causes the blood vessels to dilate and release fluid into the surrounding tissue causing the hives. Neutrophilia (increase in neutrophils) usually indicates a bacterial infection. Lymphocytosis (increase in lymphocytes) usually indicates a viral or fungal infection. Eosinophilia (increase in eosinophils) could indicate a parasitic infection or allergy. Monocytes are involved in phagocytosis (cell eating).

(Apr. 17 – Apr. 23) Mikala is diagnosed with a parasitic infection. What cell type would be increased in the CBC?

(D) Eosinophils. Eosinophilia (increase in eosinophils) could indicate a parasitic infection or allergy. Lymphocytosis (increase in lymphocytes) usually indicates a viral or fungal infection. An increase in neutrophils (neutrophilia) would possibly indicate a bacterial infection.

(Apr. 10 – Apr. 16) Vanessa has a viral infection. What cell type would be increased in the CBC (Complete Blood Count)?

(B) Lymphocytes. Lymphocytosis (increase in lymphocytes) usually indicates a viral or fungal infection. An increase in neutrophils would possibly indicate a bacterial infection. Eosinophilia could indicate a parasitic infection or allergy.

(Apr. 3 – Apr. 9) Peter thought he had a viral infection. However, the blood work showed an increase in what type cells that indicated it was bacterial?

(A) Neutrophils. Neutrophilia (increase in neutrophils) usually indicates a bacterial infection. An increase in lymphocytes would possibly indicate a viral or fungal infection. Eosinophilia could indicate a parasitic infection or allergy.
